Andorra la Vella is the small mountain capital of Andorra and one of the main places to visit in the country. Surrounded by the Pyrenees, the city combines historic streets, mountain views, shopping, restaurants, and easy access to nature. It is also the highest capital city in Europe, sitting at an average altitude of around 1,050 metres.
The Historic Centre is the best place to see the older side of Andorra la Vella. Its narrow streets and stone buildings lead to Casa de la Vall, one of the most important historic buildings in Andorra. Nearby, Sant Esteve Church and the streets around Plaça del Poble add more history to an area that is easy to explore on foot.
The modern centre has a very different atmosphere. Avinguda Meritxell is the city’s main shopping street, with fashion stores, electronics shops, restaurants, and cafés. Shopping has long been one of the main reasons people visit Andorra, but the capital also has public squares, sculptures, riverside areas, and viewpoints where you can see the surrounding mountains.
Andorra la Vella is also a good base for exploring more of the country. Mountain trails begin close to the city, while villages, viewpoints, ski areas, and valleys are only a short drive away. This makes it possible to combine time in the capital with hiking in summer, skiing in winter, and day trips through the Pyrenees.
