Komani Lake

Komani Lake (Liqeni i Komanit) is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in northern Albania. It lies between steep mountain cliffs and deep valleys, creating scenery that looks more like Norwegian fjords than the Balkans. The lake was formed after the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Drin River, but today it is a peaceful paradise for nature lovers, photographers, and adventurous travelers.

The best way to experience Komani Lake is by ferry. The ferry ride between Koman and Fierza winds for about 3 hours through narrow canyons, emerald water, and towering limestone peaks. Along the way, you’ll pass remote villages clinging to the mountainsides, accessible only by boat. Many travelers call it one of the most beautiful boat journeys in Europe.

For those who want more adventure, kayaking, hiking, and staying in small guesthouses along the lake are also possible. This region remains mostly untouched by mass tourism, so it offers a rare glimpse into Albania’s wild beauty and traditional mountain life.

Practical Information for Visiting Komani Lake

Location: Northern Albania, between Koman and Fierza on the Drin River. The lake lies about 60 km from Shkodra and 130 km from Tirana.

How to Visit: Most visitors take the daily ferry from Koman to Fierza (or the reverse). The ferry usually runs from spring to autumn. Tickets can be booked online or at the small port terminals. Smaller boat tours and private transfers are also available.

Getting There: From Shkodra, drive or take a shuttle to Koman (about 2–2.5 hours on winding mountain roads). Parking is available near the ferry terminal. From Fierza, you can continue toward Valbona Valley — many travelers combine the lake ferry with the famous Valbona–Theth hike.

Best Time to Visit: Late spring to early autumn offers the most reliable ferry service and pleasant weather.

What to Bring: Warm layers (it can be cool on the water), snacks, drinking water, and a camera. There are no shops on board, and mobile signal is very limited along the route.

Tours: Organized tours are available from cities like Shkodra and Tirana. These often include round-trip transport, the ferry ride, and stops at scenic viewpoints.
