HISTORIC BUILDING

Casa de la Vall

Casa de la Vall is one of the most important historical buildings in Andorra la Vella Old Town. The stone manor house served as the seat of Andorra’s parliament for more than 300 years and remains one of the best places to understand the country’s political history.

The building dates from the late 16th century and has the appearance of a small fortified residence, with thick stone walls, a slate roof, narrow windows, and defensive features. The Consell General bought the house in 1701 and moved into it in 1702. Parliament remained here until 2011, when it moved to a modern building nearby.

What You Can See Inside Casa de la Vall

A guided visit takes you through several rooms connected with Andorra’s government, justice system, and daily political life. The building is quite small, so the visit is easy to combine with the rest of Andorra la Vella Old Town.

Council Chamber

The Council Chamber was the main meeting room of the Consell General, Andorra’s parliament. It remained the centre of parliamentary life until the move to the new parliament building in 2011.

The room still preserves important details connected with the country’s political traditions, including the old council seating and symbols of the Andorran institutions.

Courtroom / Justice Hall

The ground floor contains the historic Tribunal de Corts, or criminal courtroom. Casa de la Vall was not only a parliament building. For many years, government, administration, and justice were all carried out under the same roof.

“Cabinet of the Seven Keys”

This famous wooden cabinet was used to store the most important documents of Andorra. It required seven keys — one from each parish — to open it.

Historic Architecture

Casa de la Vall was originally a noble family home. Its traditional Pyrenean architecture includes stone walls, a slate roof, wooden details, and defensive elements.

The building has changed over time, especially during a major renovation in 1962, but much of its historic character remains visible.

Garden and Tower

Take a few minutes to walk around the outside of the building after the tour.

The garden area gives you a better view of Casa de la Vall’s stone walls and tower. You can also see several sculptures and monuments connected with important moments in Andorran history.
